For many travellers to New Zealand Piopiotahi, Milford Sound, will be a highlight of their travel itinerary. Located in Fiordland National Park, in the South Island of New Zealand it is one of the most iconic destinations in the world. It truly is an impressive place, with magnificent scenery carved by the retreating glaciers many years ago. The steep mountains rise from the sea, and the high rainfall creates a unique environment on both land and sea. The remoteness of Piopiotahi, Milford Sound ensures some of the best nature and wilderness New Zealand has to offer.

Here are our reasons why we think it is 100% defiantly worth visiting!

Milford Sound is always captivating, and a must-do during a New Zealand holiday!

  1. Stunning Scenery: Milford Sound is often referred to as the "Eighth Wonder of the World" due to its breathtaking landscapes. Towering cliffs, dramatic waterfalls, lush rainforests, and crystal-clear waters create a mesmerising and picturesque environment.
  2. Iconic Landmark, Mitre Peak: This distinctive mountain is one of the most recognisable natural landmarks in New Zealand. The peak rises almost vertically from the water to a height of approximately 1,692 meters (5,551 feet), creating a breathtaking and photogenic sight.
  3. Waterfalls: The fiord is adorned with numerous cascading waterfalls. These waterfalls are especially spectacular after heavy rainfall when they flow vigorously from the steep cliffs surrounding the fiord (and sometimes during a storm will even get blown upwards). One of the highlights for visitors to Milford Sound on a boat cruise is to venture into the mist of the mighty Stirling Falls to feel the awesome power of the water on their faces! It is an exhilarating experience, though can result in passengers getting very wet at times.

  4. Fiord Formation: Milford Sound is a classic example of a glacially carved fjord. It was sculpted by glaciers during the last Ice Age, resulting in the steep cliffs and deep waters that characterise it today.
  5. Wildlife: The fiord is home to a diverse range of marine wildlife, including seals, dolphins, penguins, and a variety of bird species. Visitors have the best opportunity to spot these animals while on a boat cruise. Our favourite is the New Zealand Fur Seal, which is commonly sighted basking on the rocks at the narrowest point of the fiord.  The high wind at this point acts as a natural insect repellent to keep the pesky sandflies away!

  6. Outdoor Activities: Milford Sound offers various outdoor activities such as boat cruises, kayaking, and hiking trails. These activities allow you to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the area. Our trip pick is the Milford Track Guided Walk from Sandfly Point. This half-day adventure allows you experience the area at a slower pace as you explore the area by foot. Wrap up the day with a boat cruise to ensure you do not miss a thing!
  7. Remote and Unspoiled: Despite its popularity as a tourist destination, Milford Sound remains relatively remote and unspoiled, with limited development and a commitment to preserving its pristine environment. One if the charms of Milford Sound is the limited cell phone coverage. When you travel to Milford Sound you get to escape our digitally connected world and just enjoy the breathtaking landscape without distractions.
  8. Rainforests: Surrounding the fiord are lush rainforests, which are home to unique flora and fauna. Consider joining a guided trip for your day out, they can provide valuable insights and educational information, enhancing your understanding and appreciation of Milford Sound's environment.
